The Media Center supports the University's curriculum by providing access to non-print materials (except microforms) in all disciplines.

Non-print materials include:

videocassettes compact discs CD-ROMs laser discs DVD's

computer software tape cassettes (audio cassettes) phonograph records slides

All Media Center materials are listed in the Library Catalog (the PAC) .

Services

• Checkout of media materials
  
  Circulation Periods:
  • 4 hours for items designated For Media Center Use Only
  • 4 hours for all Media Reserve items
  • 4 days for all other items with 1 renewal
  
  Media materials are subject to a fine of $1.00 a day for each overdue item.
  
  
• Media Reserve includes media materials placed on reserve by instructors to support course work for use within the Media Center
  
  
• ITV (Instructional Television) playback :
  
  The Media Center has a hookup with Instructional Technology Services (ITS) to allow viewing (i.e. playback) of items in the ITS Media Catalog.
  
  
  • ITV playback is available by request at the the Media Center service desk.
    
  • The hours when these materials may be viewed are:
    
    ITS PLAYBACK HOURS :
    
    • Monday - Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.*
      
    • Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
      
    • ITS is closed on weekends.

Media Reserve: Media materials placed on reserve by instructors for use within the Media Center.

ITS Media Catalog:Search to obtain program information such as catalog number, program length, format, and availability.

Video Encyclopedia of the Twentieth Century: A computer accessible program which includes text and video clips of many historic events which occurred during the twentieth century. The video clips, which range from one to ten minutes, may be recorded for use in multimedia presentations. VHS format only at this time.

Jewish Heritage Video Collection: The Collection was designed as a series of courses that explore key topics in Jewish life and the heritage of American Jews through the unique resources of film and television. The Collection includes features and documentaries, television programs, American and foreign productions. Also included with the collection are original in-depth study guides that address vital issues of Jewish history, identity, and culture. Available for a 4-hour checkout in-house.

Rock En Espanol / Musica Sin Fronteras: An important collection of contemporary Latino music, with an emphasis on rock music from Mexico. Groups represented include Mana, Ozomatli, and Caf‹ Tacuba. This collection has been made available through the generosity of the Department of Chicano/Chicana studies.

Lannan Literary Videos: Over sixty titles, each featuring a single author being interviewed and reading from his or her work. Authors range from well-known literary figures such as Seamus Heaney and Alice Walker to emerging authors such as Sandra Cisneros and Caryl Phillips. Videos are each sixty minutes long.

American Theatre Wing Collection: The American Theatre Wing, with CUNY-TV, has produced for video thirty of their famous –Working in the Theatre• seminars. Four different subjects are covered: Performance, Production, Director/Choreographer/Playwright and Designers. The seminars utilize leading professionals in the theatre.

Facilities

• Audio/Visual stations (24) for listening to and/or viewing media individually.

• Audio/Visual rooms (7) for listening to and/or viewing media individually or in small groups.

• DVD Specialty Room 61S - Users have a choice of two work stations, one for the viewing of non-US VHS and DVDs via region-free players, and a second area with a light table for the viewing of laser discs.

• Lighted slide viewing table (2) for slides placed on reserve by faculty.

• Video Editing Stations (16 Mac and 7 Win/PC) for both analog and digital source materials are equipped with software for editing class presentation videos or home videos. The equipment may not be used for duplicating copyrighted materials.

• Wired Presentation Room 63 - Users can film presentations using a digital video camera and tripod, then edit on computer with Studio/DV software. This room also accommodates large groups (20 -30) for class viewing of media.
  
  All rooms may be reserved by calling the Media Center (594-6757) or by signing up at the Media Circulation Desk.
