In the words of playwright William Shakespeare, "All the World's
a Stage,/And all the men and women merely players./They have their exits
and their entrances;/And one man in his time plays many parts..."
(As You Like It, Act II, Scene 7). Collections representing the "many
parts" of performing arts history on campus, in San Diego generally,
on the national stage, and beyond are housed in Special Collections and
University Archives. A sampling of rare books, photographs, programs,
posters, postcards, sheet music, record albums, and other items drawn
from these collections are on display in an exhibit in the browsing area
from December 16, 2002 to an extended date of March 16, 2003. Items from
the papers of former dance professor Evelyn Lockman, the records of the
Department of Theatre, and the University Archives Photographic Collection
offer highlights of campus activities over the years. San Diego's rich
theatrical history is illustrated by significant materials from the collections
of the Old Globe Theatre, its former board member Darlene Gould Davies,
and the Hispanic Theatre of San Diego and its founder Jesus Sierra-Oliva.
Care to catch a glimpse of the Broadway stage over the past century? The
exhibit also includes sheet music and record-album covers from the collection
of Vince Meades, playbills and programs from the Mona Mitchell Theatre
Program Collection, colorful covers from Theatre Magazine, and selections
from the John R. and Jane Adams Postcard Collection of actors and actresses
from days gone by. Items lent by SDSU's very own Costume Shop help further
to set the stage.
MANY THANKS TO

graphic design talent that she provided to produce our exhibit poster
and Teri McConnell Tavares and other SDSU Costume Shop staff in the Department
of Theatre for lending us the beautiful masks, costume pieces, and fabrics
that adorn our display cases.
We would also like to thank our indispensable student assistants Reneé
Cody, Hugo Hurtado, Marita Johnson, Angélica Montes, Viviana Munoz,
Viktoria Nikolova, Autumn Ninteman, and Nichole Ramaglia for their hard
work, reliability, and creativity, as well as the staff members of Special
Collections, Cristina Favretto, Jennifer Martinez, Kathi Neal (exhibit
curator), Jossie Chavez, and Elke Zobl, for their input and support.
