The Building of
SDSU
On November 27, 2007, San Diego
State University Library and Information Access unveiled “Snapshot
of an Era: Uncovering our New Deal Past,” a major exhibit exploring
the genesis of the university campus and the development of San Diego
during the New Deal, a foundational time in the history of San Diego and
San Diego State University. Using archival photographs, institutional
records, memorabilia and other primary resources, the exhibit highlights
the impact of various New Deal programs on the physical campus environment
and on student life during the 1930s, including the Works Progress Administration,
the National Youth Administration and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration.
The exhibit is in conjunction with the installation of the restored Depression-era
mural “NRA Packages” in the library. The exhibit will be on
display through summer session 2008 in Reference Services and the Donor
Hall, as well as in the Department of Special Collections.

Lost
and Found
“Lost and Found”
is a new exhibit in the SDSU library featuring book art produced by the
students of Michele Burgess’ “Art of the Book” course.
Students were asked to select an outdated or obscure book that appealed
to them from the Compact Storage shelves. After finding a book, they responded
to the contents of the book by making a new dust jacket for it, along
with inserts to be placed inside the book. The dust jackets and inserts
(which do not harm the original book in any way) fuse the book’s
subject matter and physical aspects with the student’s personal
experiences to create a new and provocative book object.
This unique exhibit is located in the basement
hallway outside of Compact Shelving, adjacent to the Laptop Lounge. In
June, the exhibit will move to the display cases outside of Special Collections
(4th floor of Manchester Hall). For more information, call Special Collections
at (619) 594-6791. |
